The curtain raiser to the main game begins at 10:00am and sees the Australian Convicts taking on Team Canada (Northwind) less the players involved in the grand final. The Mississauga Demons will be hosting a BBQ at the event, admission is free to all those interested so come and join the team and watch this years 2 best teams go head to head for what promises to be a tough and tight contest. The Eagles will be looking to repeat last year's performance and retain the trophy; the Roos have looked the goods all year and will be keen to take away their first Grand Final victory. Both teams have 13-1 records with their only loss to each otherAug 20, 2007, 11:24 am Guelph faced off against the recently re-named High Park Demons in Round 13 of the 2007 OAFL competition. The Demons had been a little unlucky this season with numbers hurting them but still playing some very good footy throughout the year. Guelph's injury woes continue with the team able to field only 16 fit players on the day but the Demons graciously agreeing to play equal numbers in a sign or sportsmanship somewhat lacking this season. Guelph welcomed Chris "Lingus" Cunning onto the team for his first outing this season as it appears that all that watching from the sideline was getting too much for him. The first half saw the scoreboard leader swing between the 2 teams a little but had Guelph leading at half time by a goal or 2. Matt Newark and Lingus had been switching up the rucking duties against Dale "Floppy" Simnett from the Demons who is always a tough challenge but were holding up well. The half time break had Coach Brad Slingo reposition Lingus into the forward line as a target and those huge baseball mitt hands he possesses proved to do the job nicely with Lingus taking mark after mark in the 3rd qtr and kicking some nice goals. Again Cam Grant and his Brother Scott were asserting themselves in some nice running plays. Matt Bannon marking the Demons best player who was having a blinder was finding it tough but playing some great football. Matt Newark, really coming into his own as we enter the latter half of the season had those long legs of his pumping up and down the field and grabbing some really nice marks. Gord Munro was an unfortunate early exit from the game as he did some damage to an ankle trying to hurdle a park bench out of play resulting in a chipped bone and the likely end to his season. Jeff Borysiewicz made his return after a 4-week hiatus repairing a sprained ankle and had some great runs through the middle of the ground. Jim Godin who has taken to the game particularly well in his first year was roaming the ground looking for opportunities to pounce on the ball. Jim taking one particularly nice run down the field with numerous bounces looking the goods until it went a little South with an awkward last bounce which we've all done at one point in time. Lingus stretched the score line considerably in the 3rd and had Guelph leading by 6 goals. The 4th saw some spirited play by the Demons looking for a comeback and they really took it to Guelph kicking to within 7 points at the end of the game with the last goal kicked after the horn had sounded. Guelph managed to hold on and walked away with the win playing 4 fairly good quarters of football and looking forward to hosting the Broadview Hawks this coming Saturday in Guelph at 3:00pm 8/25/07 Final Score Guelph Gargoyles 9.13.(67) defeated High Park Demons 8.12. (60) Come and join the team as they attempt to keep their finals hopes alive and play their last home game for 2007. Location details with a detailed map can be found under the locations tab on this website. Aug 15, 2007, 2:26 pm The Guelph Gargoyles faced the Toronto Eagles in round 12 of the 2007 OAFL competition. Guelph was looking to rebound after the previous rounds drumming at the hands of the Etobicoke Kangaroos. The Eagles had only lost one game this season so were keen to keep their winning ways on track and head towards repeating their 2006 performance in finishing with the OAFL premiership. The weather gods turned on a rather gloomy afternoon with rain showers and high humidity making conditions uncomfortable at best. Jason Fox had a run in with the padlock separating him from the goal post pads and field marking equipment. Fortunately Foxy fared well and was able to get the job done with a little help from some of his blacksmithing tools. Guelph again hindered by numerous injuries and players with prior commitments could only field 17 players but matched up against the Eagles playing 17 per side as well to begin the game as scheduled at 2:00pm. Assistant coach Chris "Lingus" Cunning shuffled the lineup a little to offer a mix of defense and attack and the ball up saw the game begin. Matt Newark started in the ruck for Guelph and was having a great game winning the majority of the ball from his Eagles opponent. The wet weather saw a lot of the 1st quarter play on the ground as both teams had problems taking clean marks. Guelph got back to it's tried and true method of hitting the ball hard on the ground and was making it difficult for the skilled Eagles players to cleanly dispose of the ball. The Eagles were the first to kick a major but it was soon responded to by Guelph a few minutes later with Carl O'Brien bagging one. Jim Godin was creating havoc for the Eagles forward line, time and time again spoiling marks and attacking the play as the Eagles center or backline kicked forward to what looked to be a strong marking opportunity. The 1st quarter ended with the Eagles in front but only marginally with both teams having 2 goals but the Eagles ahead on behinds. Lingus was happy with the team's performance and requested that the team continue doing what it had in the first qtr. The Eagles had other ideas and came out strong at the beginning of the second and were able to put a few goals on the board. Guelph temporarily backed off picking up the ball and it cost them. The Gargoyles defense was doing a great job and keeping most of the scoring shots on goal well away from the center of the field or at a sufficient distance to ensure that most of the kicks ended in behinds. Jason Fox was keeping the Eagles full forward relatively quiet. Both teams were playing a very physical game with some huge hits and tough play ensuring there would be no easy wins. The Gargoyles found themselves behind at half time but not out of the game lagging by 30 odd points. Matt Newark asked each and every team member at half time to concentrate on picking the ball up when it was on the ground for the second half. The Gargoyles keen to not let this one get away from them came out extremely strong in the 3rd qtr. Matt Newark leading by example and quickly bagging 3 goals from strong marks. Some very spirited play by the Guelph team had shell shocked the Eagles and they remained goalless for the qtr although kicked some behinds with inaccurate goal kicking the order of the day. Guelph continued to enforce a tough brand of football and climbed to within 11 points of the Eagles total by then end of the 3rd. Rejuvenated and feeling confident the team discussed what was required in the 4th to upset the Eagles. The Eagles coach obviously not too pleased with the result in the 3rd summonsed his team to the center of the ground. The 4th started strong with both teams hard at the ball again and Guelph making it difficult for the Eagles to play their usual style of football. The Eagles were able to take first blood in the quarter and managed another goal before the Gargoyles were able to offer any scoring opportunities. 2 kicks resulting in behinds due the ever-present goal posts were frustrating to say the least for the Gargoyles. In the end the Eagles were able to hold on and win the game 61 to 37. The team was happy to regroup and win back some confidence with a strong performance and looks forward to the next match against the High Park Demons on Saturday August 18th @ 2:00pm in Toronto a Humber Nth College. Goals: Carl O'Brien (2), Matt Newark (3) Each and every player contributed to the game in a solid performance with standouts from Matt Newark, Jim Godin, Jason Fox, Cam Grant, Sam Irivng, Matt Bannon and Mike. Aug 7, 2007, 5:36 pm Due to unfavourable weather conditions training has been cancelled for today but will commence again Thursday evening at the Unversity 7:00pm - 8:30pm. Jul 26, 2007, 1:16 pm Saturday July 21st saw the Guelph Gargoyles matched up against the Toronto Central Blues for Round 10 of the 2007 OAFL competition. Guelph was keen to get back on the winners board and drive home their percentage points for/against to better their chances of a playoff position. The Blues proved to be a much improved squad that were keen to get to he ball first and had perfected their kicking and marking during the season. Guelph led for most of the game in a fairly low scoring event that saw both teams repelled in the respective backlines time and time again. Some poor discipline cost Guelph a few decisions during the game and a pivotal one in the last 30 seconds of the match when the teams were tied. The Blues given a penalty for a high tackle within kicking distance of the goals. The Blues kicked and Guelph watched as the ball stayed high and hit the goal post to give the Blues their first win in the competition defeating Guelph 5.9. (39) to 6.2. (38). Guelph looks to redeem the loss against the top of the ladder Etobicoke Kangaroos Saturday July 28th in Toronto @ Humber North 2:00pm. Jul 17, 2007, 1:36 pm
Saturday saw a much-anticipated match fail to materialize as the newly relocated High Park Demons formerly of Mississauga struggled to field the required number of players for an official match. The rain didn't quell the enthusiasm at the field as the team divided into 2 and had a scratch match for 2x15 minute quarters against each other before the available Demons players arrived. The Demons then played a 12 per side game against Guelph in the wet that was just for fun as the game had officially already been defaulted.
The Gargoyles would like to thank the Demons players that made there way down to Guelph and attended the Wellington Brewery party on Saturday night. It was a great success with quite a few heavy heads on Sunday morning.
A big thank you to everyone for attending and Jeff/Nicole for running the evening, Matt N for his BBQ skills and Matt B for running the rather disturbing Rookie initiations.
Jul 5, 2007, 11:11 am Round 7 of the OAFL competition saw Guelph matched up against a previous heavyweight in the form of the Toronto Downtown Dingos. Guelph had dismantled their season last year ending a 13 game winning streak that saw them fall from grace. The 2007 match up was eagerly anticpated by both teams with former Dingo Chris Cunning helping Guelph out on the coaching front this year.
The game started with Guelph having a couple of players available off the bench althought the revised timeslot of 3:00pm excluded some members from the game. Both teams started well with Guelph kicking the first major in a very nice display from Slinga. Rodney "Rocket" Ireland took a great mark in the first Qtr only to pull up lame and have to leave the field with a hamstring injury. This started a rash of injuries that saw Guelph left with no bench and having to keep injured players on the field just to have the numbers filled which is never fun.
Half time saw Guelph 3 goals behind and still in the game but unfortunately the Dingos ran away with it in the second half and gave us a good old thrashing.
Final Score Guelph 4.4.(28) defeated by Dingos 13.15. (93)
Guelph faces the Toronto Eagles this coming Saturday July 7th in Toronto at 12:00pm. Hopefully some of the injuries are healed and the team can get back to it's winning ways. Jun 18, 2007, 10:10 am Guelph met the Lakeshore Rebels on Sunday morning for a Fathers Day match that was moved to a 10:00am start. Both teams agreed to play 16 per side instead of the regular 18's to allow for some relief off the bench in the heat. Guelph started strong and put the points on the board in the first qtr. The Rebels fought back in the second to lead for a brief period before Guelph put their foot down and secured the lead at the end of the 3rd qtr. Guelph put through another 4 goals in the fourth to run away victors 10.11. (71) over the Rebels 5.6. (36). Full report to follow.
Goals: Carl O'Brien (3), Greg Logel (3), Ryan Zammit (1), Sam Irving (1), Gord Munro (1) and Jason Fox with his first ever OAFL goal (1). |
